The local branch of the National Association of Unemployed Graduates in Morocco in Taza announced the launch of what it described as an “open-ended escalation campaign,” following a week of intensified protests. The move will culminate in an open sit-in in front of the Taza Provincial Governorate on Friday, January 16, 2026.
In a statement, the branch said the escalation is being carried out under the slogan “No retreat from the struggle… no compromise on the right to work,” considering the step a response to what it described as the continued closure of dialogue channels and the reneging on commitments by local authorities.
According to the same statement, Taza witnessed a series of protest actions over the past week, starting with a sit-in in front of the Taza Pashalik on Wednesday, January 7, followed by a second sit-in outside the Governorate headquarters on Friday, January 9, before a mass march took place through several streets of the city on Sunday, January 11. The branch described these developments as a shift from “the logic of waiting to the logic of imposing demands.”
The statement added that tensions peaked on Tuesday, January 13, when unemployed graduates staged a warning sit-in outside the Governorate. According to the association, the sit-in was met with a heavy security presence, during which protesters were prevented from using mattresses and loudspeakers and were pushed toward the roadway—behavior the statement described as “dangerous conduct reflecting a security-based approach rather than serious engagement with legitimate social demands.”
Despite these conditions, protesters—according to the statement—reaffirm their commitment to the right to work, raising slogans denouncing what they called the “dire social situation and marginalization faced by graduates in Taza Province.” The statement also noted broad popular solidarity with the movement.
The local branch argued that the authorities’ approach amounts to an attempt to buy time and contain social anger, holding them politically and administratively responsible, as stated.
The statement concluded by announcing an open-ended sit-in on Friday, January 16, starting at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Taza Governorate, stressing that “the phase of warnings is over, and rights are not granted but won through organized and responsible struggle.”
