Taza — Consistent local sources in the city of Taza report that the repercussions of the “Qubbat Al-Souq” fire in the old medina continue to weigh heavily on the social and economic situation of a number of affected traders. The announcement of the list of beneficiaries of financial aid has sparked widespread dissatisfaction and protests among professionals who say they were excluded or treated unfairly in the distribution process.
According to available information, the fire that broke out weeks ago caused significant damage to several shops and destroyed the livelihoods of many families, amid official promises to provide financial assistance to help those affected resume their activities. However, the publication of the beneficiaries’ list—comprising around 45 names—ignited a broad debate over the criteria used to determine eligibility.
The same sources confirmed that several traders whose shops suffered severe, and in some cases total, damage were surprised to find themselves excluded from the aid, while others whose losses were relatively limited benefited from it. This situation was described by the affected traders as a “violation of the principles of fairness and equal opportunity.”
Professional representatives indicated that letters were sent to the provincial governor calling for a review of the approved list and for the adoption of actual damage assessment as a primary criterion in distributing aid. They also called for the establishment of on-site committees for evaluation and monitoring, to ensure transparency and that support reaches its rightful recipients.
According to the same sources, those affected stressed that their demands are not intended to question the usefulness of public support or the state’s intentions, but rather to correct what they described as “shortcomings” in the distribution mechanism. They warned that continued exclusion could further worsen their vulnerability and delay the resumption of commercial activity in the affected area.
Traders at “Qubbat Al-Souq” hope that their demands will be addressed as soon as possible, in order to preserve what remains of trust between citizens and the administration, and to accelerate the pace of economic and social recovery in the old medina.
