Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he considers himself the “interim governor” of Venezuela, in developments following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces.
Trump published a post on his platform Truth Social, accompanied by a satirical image mimicking the style of Wikipedia, in which he was described as the “interim president of Venezuela,” with a reference to the “start of duties: January 2026,” and mentioning J. D. Vance as vice president.
In remarks made aboard Air Force One while returning to the White House, Trump stated that talks with Venezuela were “going very well,” adding that the United States was “working positively with the leadership,” without providing further details on the nature of these discussions.
Regarding the energy sector, Trump said that Washington had discussed purchasing 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil, confirming that an initial shipment valued at $4.2 billion was on its way to the United States. He also noted that U.S. oil companies had previously faced difficulties operating in Venezuela, asserting that the situation “will change now.”
These developments come after Washington announced, on 3 January 2026, the execution of a military operation inside Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of Maduro and his wife and their transfer to the United States, a move that triggered mixed international reactions.
In New York City, during the first session of his trial, Maduro denied the charges brought against him, including “leading a corrupt government” and “cooperating with drug trafficking networks,” describing himself as a “prisoner of war.”
Meanwhile, in Caracas, Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s vice president, took the constitutional oath on 5 January, assuming the duties of interim president, according to announcements by Venezuelan authorities.
