The provincial secretariat of the Justice and Development Party in Taounate Province expressed its rejection of what it described as environmentally harmful practices—chief among them the discharge of margine (olive mill wastewater) into valleys and waterways—considering that such behaviors recur with every agricultural season dedicated to olive harvesting and pressing.
In a statement, the provincial secretariat called on the competent authorities to intervene to compel owners of certain olive-pressing units to comply with environmental regulations, and to take the necessary deterrent measures against violators, in order to protect natural resources and ensure the environmental safety of the province.
The same body also urged the rehabilitation of weekly market spaces, several of which—according to the statement—have turned into waterlogged areas following recent rainfall affecting communes and urban centers in Taounate Province, leading to organizational difficulties and potential health risks.
In a related development, official information indicated that the provincial joint committee tasked with monitoring olive mill owners’ compliance with environmental requirements set out in specifications and environmental studies has recently launched field operations. This action comes in response to media reports and complaints submitted to the provincial authorities regarding the random dumping of margine, particularly during rainy periods.
A responsible source explained that the committee is continuing its regular inspections, drafting official reports on recorded violations and referring them to the competent judicial authorities to take the appropriate legal action and impose suitable penalties—within a broader effort to curb pollution and protect the environmental landscape of the province.
