Heavy Rain Revives Fears of Building Collapses in Taza… Local Actors Call for Urgent Preventive Intervention

The significant rainfall experienced by the city of Taza in recent days has once again brought to the forefront concerns related to the safety of a number of old houses, particularly in the historic neighborhoods, amid signs of cracking and deterioration affecting some buildings and raising fears of sudden collapses.

Local actors reported that the continued heavy rain has increased the fragility of these dwellings, many of which date back several decades. They consider that the situation requires a serious and proactive response from local authorities, through conducting thorough field inspections of the areas most at risk and assessing the structural condition of buildings in order to prevent the recurrence of painful scenarios witnessed in other cities during similar periods.

The same sources noted that several houses are showing clear signs of deterioration, including water leaks and cracks in walls and ceilings, which—according to them—necessitates the adoption of urgent precautionary measures. These include temporary emergency repairs and securing threatened buildings, while prioritizing the safety of residents.

Local stakeholders stressed that early action, as a matter of prudence and caution, remains the best option to avert potential risks. They called for strengthened coordination among all relevant parties and enhanced technical monitoring during this period marked by increased rainfall.

These concerns are accompanied by photos taken from the Zawiya Al-Kabshiya area in Upper Taza, highlighting the erosion affecting some buildings, as residents await the response of the competent authorities and the adoption of the necessary preventive measures to protect lives and property.
