Germany Rejects Russian Hints of a “Kidnapping” Scenario Similar to What Happened in Venezuela

The German government has strongly condemned remarks made by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, which included what were deemed irresponsible hints at scenarios affecting the security of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Berlin stressed its absolute rejection of any rhetoric that could threaten the safety of officials or undermine state stability.

German officials explained that, despite the political and security concerns raised by these statements, they did not warrant the adoption of additional security measures. They considered that the current protection system in place is “appropriate and effective” and fully meets safety requirements.

In this context, the government, through its deputy spokesperson Sebastian Hille, reaffirmed that Berlin treats any potential threat targeting its officials with the utmost seriousness. He emphasized that Chancellor Merz is subject to strict security measures and that the overall situation remains “under control.”

Medvedev currently serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council. His remarks were accompanied by harsh characterizations of the German chancellor, in a context linking him to what Medvedev described as foreign interference in Germany’s internal affairs. Observers believe that these positions come amid a tense climate in relations between Russia and Berlin, against the backdrop of accumulated political and media tensions in recent months.

In its response, the German government reiterated that any threat to the security of senior officials or constitutional institutions constitutes a red line. It affirmed that its security policy will continue to be based on firmness and transparency, with close monitoring of any indicators or statements that could affect internal security or the course of bilateral relations.
