AFCON 2025: Morocco Edge Past Tanzania as Cameroon Set Quarter-Final Clash with the Atlas Lions

The Morocco national football team booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, hosted in Morocco, after a narrow 1–0 victory over the Tanzania national football team on Sunday evening at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, in the round of 16.

This qualification marks Morocco’s sixth appearance in the quarter-finals across 20 participations in the continental competition, and the second consecutive time since the introduction of the tournament’s new format starting with the Egypt 2019 edition.

Tanzania’s journey, meanwhile, came to an end at the round-of-16 stage, despite achieving a historic milestone by reaching the knockout phase for the first time in their fourth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

In terms of head-to-head records, Morocco further strengthened their historical dominance over Tanzania, securing their eighth victory against a single Tanzanian win across nine encounters in AFCON matches and World Cup qualifiers.

The match began at a high tempo from the Tanzanian side, who surprised the hosts with early attacking intent. Morocco gradually regained control, applying sustained pressure and creating several chances, though without finding the net in the first half.

After the break, the Atlas Lions continued their search for a breakthrough, which finally came in the 64th minute when Brahim Díaz scored the decisive goal, capitalizing on an individual effort from the right flank to give Morocco the lead and seal qualification.

In another round-of-16 encounter, the Cameroon national football team secured their quarter-final berth with a 2–1 win over the South Africa national football team at Rabat’s City Stadium.

The match was keenly contested, with both teams exchanging attacks in the first half before Cameroon opened the scoring in the closing minutes of the period from a ball delivered into the penalty area. Early in the second half, Cameroon doubled their advantage through a swift counter-attack that unsettled South Africa’s defense. Despite late pressure, “Bafana Bafana” only managed to pull one goal back in the final minutes, falling short of an equalizer.

As a result, Cameroon are set for a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown with Morocco on Friday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, in what promises to be one of the tournament’s marquee clashes, drawing significant fan anticipation.
