Between Mud and Thirst: The Plight of Douars in Taounate Province Calls for Urgent Intervention

Taounate — Residents of several douars التابعة to the Ou Tabouâbane commune in Taounate Province—including Douar Oulad Abdelkrim, Douar Beni Rachid, and Douar Al Qalaa—have expressed their dissatisfaction with the difficult living conditions they face on a daily basis, due to deteriorating road infrastructure and the ongoing problem of access to drinking water.

Local stakeholders reported that the road linking these douars is in a “worrying” condition, marked by potholes and mud, making daily travel a strenuous task—particularly for students on their way to school, patients needing access to healthcare services, as well as women and the elderly.

In the same context, residents pointed to recurrent water outages and weak water flow—and at times a complete lack of supply—forcing families to travel long distances to obtain this vital resource. This situation directly affects daily stability and living conditions in these douars.

Speakers considered that these constraints have gone beyond being temporary issues and now infringe upon residents’ basic rights. They are calling on local authorities, the Taounate Provincial Authority, and other concerned stakeholders to intervene urgently to repair the road and improve drinking water supply services, in line with residents’ expectations and to ease their daily hardship.

Local stakeholders also affirmed their readiness to coordinate with all competent parties to find practical and sustainable solutions that take into account the specificities of the province’s rural areas and improve living conditions in these communities.
