Tight security coordination intercepts major cannabis resin shipment bound for Europe (Details)

Morocco’s Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) said that a joint border-control operation carried out by National Security services and Customs at Tangier Med Port on Thursday led to the foiling of an attempted smuggling of 8 tonnes and 196 kilograms of cannabis resin (chira), concealed aboard an international freight truck.

According to the official statement, the shipment was detected after being carefully packed inside plastic rods within a Morocco-registered truck that was preparing to depart on a maritime route heading to a European port. A search and extraction operation resulted in the seizure of the reported quantity.

The same source added that the truck driver—a 50-year-old Moroccan citizen—was placed under a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office, in order to determine the circumstances of the case and identify any potential national and international links.

The statement noted that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security services at border points to combat international drug trafficking networks and the smuggling of psychotropic substances.
