Hebron – Agencies
The Israeli army announced on Sunday, December 7, 2025, the killing of two men in the occupied West Bank, following an attempted ramming attack targeting soldiers stationed at a checkpoint. The army clarified that one of the deceased was not involved in the attack, without providing additional details.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health, based in Ramallah, identified the victims as Ahmed Khalil Al-Rajabi (17 years old) and Ziad Jabara Abu Daoud (55 years old). According to Israeli Army Radio, the latter – whom the Palestinian Red Crescent identified as a sanitation worker – was driving another vehicle.
The incident occurred in the Bab al-Zawiya area of Hebron city, in the southern West Bank, according to the Palestinian ministry. The army said in a brief statement to Agence France-Presse: “A terrorist drove his vehicle at high speed toward Israeli army soldiers during an operational activity at a security checkpoint in Hebron. The soldiers responded by opening fire on the terrorist inside the vehicle, and he was neutralized.”
Hebron witnessed Abu Daoud’s funeral on Sunday, attended by hundreds of Palestinians, including many municipal employees who wore orange vests. The victim’s father, Naim Abu Daoud, described his son’s killing as a “barbaric attack,” adding in a statement to Agence France-Presse: “The soldiers ordered the car to stop, so it stopped. He was working next to a garbage container. They killed both of them together. A barbaric attack – what do you expect from an enemy?”
Escalation of Violence in the West Bank Since October 7
The West Bank has witnessed a sharp escalation in violence since the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and has not stopped despite the ceasefire that came into effect in Gaza on October 10. According to a count by Agence France-Presse based on Palestinian Authority data, more than a thousand Palestinians – including many fighters and civilians – have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers in the West Bank since that date. In contrast, official Israeli data reported the killing of at least 44 Israelis, both civilians and soldiers, in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations.
The incident led to a general strike in Hebron, where shops closed their doors and silence prevailed over the city in support of the victims. The municipal workers’ union called for a strike within institutions, noting that one of the victims was a municipal employee not involved in the alleged incident. The Palestinian news agency WAFA and the Palestinian Red Crescent also confirmed that the shooting targeted a civilian vehicle, and the army prevented ambulances from reaching the scene, reflecting a narrative that contradicts the Israeli version.
