Rabat – November 20, 2025
Security sources have announced the arrest of a lieutenant in the Royal Armed Forces and his sister’s son, who owns a grocery store in Sidi Kacem, in a successful ambush operation carried out by the National Brigade for Judicial Investigations of the Royal Gendarmerie in Rabat. The arrest came after a gendarmerie cadet who successfully passed the entrance exams to the gendarmerie services filed a complaint with his superiors at the training institute in Benguérir, stating that he was subjected to blackmail attempts.
According to the details of the incident, the cadet, who is undergoing training at the Royal Gendarmerie school in Benguérir (Rehamna Province), received repeated phone calls and threats from the nephew, who claimed to have been the main intermediary in his success thanks to the intervention of his uncle, the lieutenant in the Royal Armed Forces. The blackmailer demanded an amount of four million centimes (approximately 40,000 dirhams) in exchange for this “service,” claiming that the lieutenant had intervened with the Human Resources services at the High Command to ensure his qualification.
The cadet’s family attempted to persuade the intermediary to stop the threats by paying two million centimes (20,000 dirhams), but this did not deter him from continuing the calls. The cadet assured senior officers at the institute that his success was the result of his personal competence, which led to notifying the High Command of the Royal Gendarmerie in Rabat. This resulted in assigning a gendarmerie “commando” unit from Chekhman barracks on Avenue An-Nasr in the capital, which proceeded to Sidi Kacem after notifying the King’s Prosecutor at the local Court of First Instance.
In the ambush operation, the nephew was caught red-handed while attempting to receive the money, and his phone was seized, revealing calls and conversations between him and the lieutenant. The analyses showed that these communications indicated fraud attempts, especially with phrases like “let me handle it” that raised suspicions. The lieutenant denied his involvement, claiming that the conversations were ordinary, and his nephew confirmed that his uncle was not involved in the scandal.
Both were referred to the King’s Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Sidi Kacem, who, after reviewing the judicial police reports, decided to refer them to the investigating judge. The store owner was placed in pretrial detention at Outat El Haj prison, while the lieutenant was released pending the results of investigations, which include examining all conversations and hearing additional testimonies.
This case is an example of ongoing efforts to combat corruption within security and military institutions, with the investigation directly supervised by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the High Command of the Gendarmerie. The incident underscores the importance of coordination between victims and responsible authorities to expose such practices, especially in the context of recruitment and training in the security apparatus.
