Taounate – Local sources and Royal Gendarmerie elements at the Tissa center announced on Monday morning, November 17, 2025, a complete suspension of traffic on Regional Road No. 509 connecting Fez – Tissa – Taounate, specifically at the Berachma area (between Tissa and Ghafsai), due to heavy rainfall that the region experienced on Sunday night through Monday.
Causes of the Closure
- Flooding of Oued Berachma and several small tributaries crossing the road.
- Accumulation of mud, rocks, and debris over a distance exceeding 400 meters.
- Partial collapse of part of the road sides due to torrents.
Field Situation as of 11:00 AM
- Traffic is completely suspended in both directions.
- Ministry of Equipment and Water machinery (Fez-Meknes Regional Directorate) is on its way to the site with bulldozers and trucks to remove mud.
- Royal Gendarmerie and Civil Protection elements are securing the area and preventing vehicle passage for safety.
Suggested Alternative Routes
- From Fez to Taounate:
Fez → Sefrou → Imouzzer Kandar → Taza → Tissa → Taounate (adding approximately 80 km). - From Taza to Fez: Same route in reverse.
- From Ain Aicha/Ghafsai to Taounate: Wait until the road opens or return to Taza.
Important Warning
- It is strictly forbidden to attempt crossing the collapsed area or water-submerged zones.
- Several cars got stuck last night and their passengers were rescued by Civil Protection.
The road reopening will be announced as soon as clearance work is completed and safety is confirmed.
