From “popular leader” to “resentimentalist”… How Benkirane is changing his rhetoric toward his popular base on the normalization issue

Abdelilah Benkirane, Secretary-General of the Party of Justice and Development, considered that the Moroccan people “have failed miserably” in confronting normalization with Israel. He made these remarks during his speech at the third national conference of the Association of Justice and Development Engineers, held on Saturday in Rabat.

Benkirane explained that the scale of slogans raised in marches and demonstrations opposing normalization is “relatively reasonable but insufficient.” He pointed out that the real confrontation on this issue took place in Egypt after the normalization agreement was signed in 1979, where the Egyptian people maintained a boycott of Israelis despite the official normalization by the regime.

Regarding Morocco, Benkirane stated that the achievements were “only modest,” recalling some student initiatives such as the protests by students of Mohammed VI University in Benguerir. He added that Moroccan protests and marches did not reach the level seen in Europe, citing a massive march organized in Australia in support of the Palestinian cause.
