Fes: Juveniles Involved in Violence and Vandalism Referred to Rehabilitation Center

The Abdelaziz Ben Idriss Center in Fes received five juveniles referred by the public prosecution from the courts of Taza and Guercif, charged with involvement in riots and vandalism of public and private property. This follows protests by the youth movement “Gen Zed.” Additionally, 35 other juveniles were handed over to their guardians with appropriate legal measures applied.

Among those sent to the rehabilitation center, two juveniles along with 11 others were arrested at various locations in Taza, while three others and 24 juveniles were referred to the juvenile judge in Guercif. All are facing five criminal charges and were handed over to their families while being placed under supervision.

The juveniles face charges including “organizing an unauthorized demonstration, insulting public security officers during their duties, committing violence against them, disobedience, and damaging public property.” Seven of them also face charges of causing material damage to others’ property. The juvenile judge summoned nine victims from the security forces to testify.

In Taza, eight adults were prosecuted and imprisoned on similar charges. They are scheduled to appear before the criminal court in the first session of their trial, alongside 19 adults being tried in Guercif. The hearing was attended by 38 victims, most of whom are security personnel who sustained various degrees of injuries during the unrest.

The accused face nine criminal charges including “use of violence against public officials during duty, insults, destruction of public property, causing material damage to others’ property, and disobedience involving more than two persons.” Additional charges include “incitement to commit misdemeanors and felonies, possession of weapons under threatening circumstances, participation in an armed nighttime assembly, and organizing an unauthorized demonstration with dangerous instruments threatening public security.”

According to reports, the suspects, along with 27 other juveniles, were brought before authorities last Friday; three were referred to the rehabilitation center in Fes, while the rest were handed over to their parents. The accusations stem from incidents of vandalism involving private vehicles, urban transport buses, a bank agency, and damages to public and private properties including the façade of the Taza municipal building.

These proceedings are part of the judicial and prosecutorial efforts to tackle the recent violence and vandalism in Taza and Guercif, aiming to restore security and order and to hold those responsible accountable.
