Gaza Under Bombardment: Families Devastated After New Strike on al-Shati Refugee Camp

Around bloodstained shrouded bodies, women dressed in black abayas scream in grief, their arms raised toward the sky, mourning their loved ones killed in a strike on the al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza City.

One woman holds tightly to the small body of her child, wrapped in a white sheet with only the head visible.

According to Salwa Sobhi Bakr, five members of her family were killed overnight during a strike on this camp in Gaza City, where Israel launched a major offensive on September 16, aiming to eliminate what it describes as the last large stronghold of the Islamist movement Hamas, whose October 7, 2023, attack on Israel triggered the war.

The Gaza Civil Defense, a first-aid organization operating under Hamas authority, reported that seven people were killed “in an Israeli strike” on al-Shati camp, and reported a total of 82 deaths across Palestinian territories on Saturday, including 38 in Gaza City.

Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza confirmed receiving six bodies of victims killed in the attack on al-Shati. The Israeli army did not immediately respond.

The bodies were taken for burial — adults on stretchers, children carried in the arms of their relatives — amid devastated streets.

“The children were sleeping when suddenly a missile fell on us,” recounts Salwa Sobhi Bakr.

“Five members of the Bakr family were killed — the entire family. What does the world want from us? What does Netanyahu want? What does Hamas want?” she questions.

“What is happening are massacres, massacres forbidden by international laws,” laments Umm Khalil, a survivor of the attack on the family home.

Salwa Sobhi Bakr says she doesn’t know where to find refuge after nearly two years of war.

“They tell us to go there, then come back here. Where do we find money for the trucks? People are in the streets, scattered everywhere in the south. Where should we go? Find us a solution,” she pleads.

These scenes reflect the scale of tragedy faced by Gaza’s people amid escalating airstrikes and worsening humanitarian conditions, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention to stop the bloodshed and save innocent lives.
