Taounate: An “Exception” in the Calm of Fes-Meknes Region — Accusations of “Repression” and Journalists Barred from Filming During Tissa Protests

While calm and stability have prevailed across the various provinces of the Fes-Meknes region, Taounate province stood out as a worrying exception on the evening of Saturday. The town of Tissa witnessed peaceful protests met with what was described as a “violent” security intervention, accompanied by direct accusations against local authorities of repressing protesters and preventing journalists from performing their coverage and filming duties.

Contrary to scattered calls on social media that did not gain traction in other provinces, dozens of citizens in Tissa defied the ban issued by the authorities and gathered to express their developmental and social demands. According to eyewitnesses, local authorities, supported by their agents, dispersed the protesters in a manner described as “bullying.” Several journalists who attempted to document the events were prevented from filming.

Observers of local affairs view the situation in Taounate as a serious indicator of the decline in the role of official institutions as mediators for resolving problems and responding to citizens’ complaints related to corruption and public administration. While other provinces appear to successfully contain issues through institutional channels, the systematic resort to bans and security measures in Taounate is pushing tensions onto the streets.

These events add further complexity to the situation in the province, which has witnessed multiple protests in recent weeks, including the Bouarous residents’ march and demands for improved healthcare conditions. These developments raise serious questions about the reasons behind this “Taounate exception” and put the capacity of provincial authorities to engage in serious dialogue at stake instead of resorting to security solutions that exacerbate the situation.
