Taounate province is experiencing a state of escalating social tension, following a series of decisions to ban protest rallies aimed at demanding better living conditions. This tension was manifested by the prohibition of a protest in the Tissa region against the water shortage problem, despite the residents’ determination to proceed. Additionally, a journalist was prevented from filming the suffering of citizens in Bouchabel by a local authority official, who claimed to be following the orders of the local commander.
In another development, a decision was issued to ban another protest scheduled for next Monday, which was intended to demand improvements in the services of the provincial hospital.
Local activists believe that these decisions reflect a security-focused approach that prioritizes restricting peaceful forms of expression rather than addressing the root causes of the crises facing the province, most notably water scarcity and poor health services.
These activists warn that preventing the documentation of people’s suffering and clamping down on peaceful expression will only increase public frustration and push citizens toward more radical forms of protest, thereby eroding trust in institutions.
Observers assert that the solution does not lie in “administrative silence” or prohibition orders, but rather in adopting a logic of effective solutions. In their view, Taounate province is in urgent need of a positive and rapid engagement that places fundamental citizen issues, such as the right to water and healthcare, at the forefront of priorities. They call on the authorities to shift from a “logic of prohibition” to a “logic of declared and binding solutions,” formulated in partnership with the residents, in order to rebuild trust and transform anger into a genuine partnership aimed at improving conditions.
