Rabat: Woman Placed in Police Custody After Posting Image “Offensive to God” on Social Media

Rabat – A case has sparked widespread controversy in Morocco’s digital and legal circles after the public prosecutor’s office in Rabat ordered the arrest and placement of a woman in police custody. The action follows her posting of content deemed offensive to religious sentiments on a social media platform.

According to a judicial statement obtained by the newspaper TelQuel, the King’s Prosecutor at the Rabat Court of First Instance ordered an urgent judicial investigation into the matter. This came after the woman in question published a personal photo on her official account.

In the photo, the woman is seen wearing a t-shirt inscribed with phrases described in the statement as “offensive to God.” The woman did not stop at posting the image; she also accompanied it with a written post that, according to the same source, contained “a direct insult to the Islamic religion.”

In a swift legal and security move, and based on the threat this act poses to public order and social peace, the public prosecutor’s office decided to place the suspect in police custody. The decision was made “in accordance with the law” and “due to the necessity of the procedure,” as stated in the communiqué.

This action falls within the framework of enforcing Moroccan laws in force, which strictly criminalize any act that could be seen as harming religious sanctities or offending sacred values, in an effort to preserve social peace and national unity.

The judiciary is now overseeing the ongoing investigation, which aims to determine all the circumstances and details of the case. The appropriate legal consequences will be determined for the suspect as soon as the investigation is concluded and the results are presented to the public prosecutor’s office.
