In a significant development regarding the Gaza issue, the United States on Monday strongly rejected the Franco-Saudi initiative to hold an international conference at the United Nations on the two-state solution, which aims to establish two states, Israeli and Palestinian, living side by side in peace and security. Washington described this initiative as a mere ill-advised “publicity stunt” and considered it an “insult” to the victims of the attack that occurred on October 7.
Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, said in an official statement: “This week, the United Nations in New York will host an unproductive and ill-timed conference on the two-state solution. This conference comes at a sensitive and delicate time, as complex diplomatic efforts are underway to end the conflict in Gaza.”
Conversely, France, during the opening of the conference—which was boycotted by Israel and the United States—emphasized that there is “no alternative” to the two-state solution as the sole path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Washington, however, considered that this conference will not contribute to promoting peace but will instead prolong the war, encourage Hamas, reward its obstructive stance, and harm serious efforts made to establish peace in the region. The U.S. State Department spokesperson affirmed, “The United States will not participate in this insult.”
Earlier, President Donald Trump had already dismissed statements made by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state, describing them as having “little weight” and that they “will not change anything” on the ground.
These developments come amid an ongoing crisis over the future of peace in the Middle East, where international disagreements continue about the best ways to achieve a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
