Within the framework of the international momentum led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the autonomy plan, the Portuguese Republic has expressed its full backing of the autonomy initiative, considering it the most constructive, serious, and credible basis for resolving the dispute.
This position was articulated in a joint communiqué issued by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Portuguese counterpart, Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, following their meeting on Tuesday in Lisbon.
The joint statement emphasized Portugal’s recognition of the significance of the Sahara issue for Morocco, as well as its appreciation for the serious and credible efforts the Kingdom is making within the United Nations to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.
Both ministers reaffirmed their support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2756, highlighting the role and responsibility of the parties to seek a realistic, practical, and enduring political solution based on consensus.
By adopting this new stance, Portugal sends a clear signal of its alignment with the growing international consensus around Morocco’s autonomy proposal, in harmony with the strong momentum driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI towards a final and sustainable settlement of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
