As part of the National Awareness Week on the risks of poisoning caused by scorpion stings and snake bites, organized by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection from July 1 to 8, 2025, under the theme:
“Protecting Ourselves from Snake and Scorpion Poisoning,”
the Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Health in El Hajeb held an awareness meeting on Friday, July 8, for healthcare professionals in the province.
The meeting, overseen by the Regional Delegate of the Ministry of Health, included a comprehensive presentation on the dangers of scorpion stings and snake bites, providing preventive information, safety guidelines, and rapid intervention procedures in case of poisoning. The importance of immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility was emphasized, alongside warnings against harmful traditional practices such as cutting the bite site, tying the affected limb, or using herbal remedies.
The Regional Delegate highlighted that this meeting is part of the Ministry’s efforts to raise health awareness among medical and paramedical staff, aiming to reduce severe poisoning cases. The Ministry expressed its hope to achieve “zero deaths from stings and bites by 2030.”
It is noteworthy that the Moroccan Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center registers annually around 25,000 scorpion stings and 250 snake bites, mostly occurring in rural and arid areas experiencing high summer temperatures.
In this context, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection urges all citizens to follow simple preventive measures to avoid such incidents and to immediately contact the center through the toll-free emergency number: 0801000180, available 24/7 throughout the week.
