Trump Imposes 30% Tariffs on Algerian Products and Threatens Further Escalation

In a dramatic development in US-Algeria trade relations, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on July 9, 2025, announcing the imposition of a 30% tariff on all Algerian products exported to the United States.

The official White House statement clarified that this measure will take effect starting August 1, 2025, citing the need to address the “unsustainable trade deficit” with Algeria.

Trump warned that any Algerian retaliation through increased tariffs would be met with an additional increase on top of the current 30% tariff. He also noted that the 30% rate is “far less than what is required” to correct the trade imbalance between the two countries.

The letter included a conditional offer to review the tariffs, stating that the US is willing to adjust the rates “up or down” if Algeria agrees to:

  • Open its markets to American products
  • Remove tariff and non-tariff trade barriers
  • Eliminate trade restrictions

Trump described the trade deficit with Algeria as a “major threat” to the US economy and national security, while affirming Washington’s desire to continue working with Algeria as a trading partner “for years to come.”

This announcement comes amid a broader US trade policy initiative, with Trump issuing similar tariff notifications to six countries, including Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Brunei, Moldova, and the Philippines, aiming to address persistent trade imbalances and protect American economic interests.
