Five Israeli Soldiers Killed in Beit Hanoun; Netanyahu Describes a “Difficult Morning”

The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that five soldiers were killed during clashes in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing the morning as “very difficult.”

Netanyahu wrote on his X account: “On this difficult morning, the entire people of Israel bow their heads and mourn the fall of our heroic fighters.” The Israeli army stated that the five soldiers, aged between 20 and 28 and mostly from the 97th Infantry Battalion, were killed Monday evening while operating in Beit Hanoun.

The army added in an official statement that two other soldiers were seriously wounded in the same confrontation, without providing further details.

According to military correspondents from Israeli media, at least two improvised explosive devices were detonated against an infantry force operating on foot in the Beit Hanoun area. The Palestinian resistance reported that evacuation teams were also targeted by gunfire before additional explosive devices were triggered. Hamas stated on its Telegram channel that soldiers came under further fire during attempts to evacuate the wounded.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed deep sorrow over the loss of five heroic young men, most of whom were fighters from the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda Battalion, calling the news “heartbreaking.” Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid called for an end to the war, saying: “For the sake of the fighters, their families, the kidnapped, and the State of Israel, this war must stop.”

These losses come amid a rising death toll of Israeli soldiers, which has reached at least 445 since the start of the war in Gaza, according to AFP. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, with an unprecedented attack by Hamas inside Israel that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,400 people, mostly active and reserve military personnel, according to official Israeli data.

On the other side, data from the Gaza Health Ministry, run by Hamas and considered reliable by the United Nations, reports over 57,523 Palestinians killed, mostly civilians, in the Israeli military’s retaliatory campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The situation in Gaza remains extremely tense, with ongoing fighting and increasing casualties on both sides amid repeated calls for a ceasefire and dialogue.
