In an unprecedented development signaling a fundamental shift in Washington’s approach toward the separatist Polisario Front militias, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson from South Carolina, supported by Democratic Congressman Jimmy Panetta, introduced a bill to the U.S. Congress calling explicitly for the designation of the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organization.
This step is described as a severe blow to the collusion alliance between Algeria, the Polisario Front, and Iran. It reflects a growing American recognition of the true nature of this armed entity, which has long hidden behind false slogans of “self-determination” while in reality operating as a Marxist militia engaged in extortion, chaos, and serving hostile agendas aimed at destabilizing North Africa and the Sahel region.
In an official tweet, Congressman Wilson stated:
“The Polisario Front is a Marxist militia backed by Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia, providing Tehran with a strategic foothold in Africa, and working to destabilize the Kingdom of Morocco, a historic U.S. ally for 248 years.”
The bill, named the “Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act,” enjoys bipartisan backing, with Democratic Congressman Jimmy Panetta co-sponsoring alongside Wilson, giving it significant political momentum within Congress.
This proposal comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and U.S. efforts to counter growing Iranian influence across Africa, with reports indicating that the Polisario Front acts as a “field proxy” for the Iranian axis in the region.
If passed, the bill would freeze the Polisario Front’s assets within the United States and impose sanctions on any entities supporting it, whether inside Algeria or abroad, including diplomatic isolation and further penalties on the Algerian regime, which politically and financially sponsors the group.
The bill sends a clear message to Algeria before the Polisario: the era of impunity is over. Washington will no longer stand idly by as the Tindouf region turns into a hub of Iranian, Algerian, and separatist influence, nor tolerate the use of the Western Sahara issue as leverage against Morocco, which today is a key pillar of regional stability and counterterrorism.
The bill asserts that the Polisario Front is not a liberation movement but a regional destabilizing force, a gateway for extremism, and the spearhead of a destructive project led by Tehran behind the scenes under official Algerian cover, posing a direct threat to collective security in the Mediterranean basin and West Africa.
The ball is now in the international community’s court, which can no longer ignore the terrorist nature of this entity that thrives on the suffering of Tindouf detainees and threatens regional security and stability. There is an urgent need for a firm and clear stance against these threats.
This American bill marks a qualitative shift in dealing with the Western Sahara file, reflecting Washington’s increased commitment to protecting its allies in the region and confronting Iranian influence and terrorist threats emanating from this Algerian-backed separatist entity.
