L3HarrisTech, in collaboration with Israeli company Elta Systems, unveiled a reconnaissance and intelligence aircraft model based on the Bombardier Global 6500, specially designed for the Royal Moroccan Air Force, during the Marrakech International Airshow 2024 held from October 30 to November 2 at the Royal Moroccan Air Force base.
Aircraft Details and Technical Capabilities
The aircraft boasts a flight range exceeding 12,000 kilometers and an endurance of up to 18 hours nonstop, making it suitable for long-range strategic missions. It is equipped with advanced systems including multiple sensors, sophisticated radar, and electronic interception systems (SIGINT), enhancing its intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
The model was displayed in Moroccan colors, showcased alongside Moroccan F-16 fighter jets and unmanned aerial vehicles such as the Wing Loong II and Bayraktar TB2, highlighting its central role in Morocco’s modern air defense architecture.
Project Status and International Cooperation
Sources indicate that two of these aircraft are being prepared for Morocco with technical support from L3HarrisTech and Elta Systems. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance national defense capabilities in surveillance and intelligence. The project coincides with Morocco’s acquisition of other advanced systems like HIMARS, Predator Hawk missiles, and the Israeli LORA ballistic missile.
Regional Context and Growth of Morocco’s Aerospace Industry
This development comes amid significant growth in Morocco’s aerospace sector, which has doubled its number of active companies over the past decade and increased exports by 23% in 2024, reaching approximately 2 billion Moroccan dirhams monthly. Morocco’s partnerships with global companies such as Airbus, Boeing, and Safran further strengthen its position as a regional hub for aerospace and defense industries.
Future Outlook
Despite notable progress, final contract details and official delivery schedules have yet to be announced by L3HarrisTech or the Moroccan government. Nevertheless, this project represents a strategic step in bolstering Morocco’s defense capabilities against regional challenges, reflecting the country’s commitment to developing advanced surveillance and reconnaissance systems aligned with global security and defense trends.
