France: Trial Begins for Marcial Lenoir, Accused of Killing Moroccan-Spanish Man in Paris Shooting

Paris – The Paris Criminal Court has commenced the trial of Marcial Lenoir, accused of fatally shooting Eric Casado Lopez, a 27-year-old man of Moroccan and Spanish descent, during a street incident in May 2022.

According to Ouest-France, Lenoir appeared before the court on Tuesday, June 17, denying any intent to kill or racial motivation behind the fatal shooting.

The incident occurred late one night on Rue de Clichy, when Lenoir, reportedly trying to break up a street altercation, was asked to leave. Instead, he allegedly drew a firearm and shot Casado Lopez in the head before fleeing the scene. Authorities later arrested him while he was in possession of luggage, suggesting he was prepared to flee.

In court, Lenoir expressed remorse and apologized to the victim’s family, insisting that the gun discharged “unintentionally” and denying any racist motivation.

However, the case took a more complex turn after investigators uncovered a controversial message shared shortly before the incident in a Telegram group called “Les Anti-Smith”, allegedly managed by Lenoir. The post contained inflammatory language and anti-Semitic undertones. The defendant denied authoring the message, claiming his voice might have been cloned using AI technology.

As of now, the court has not officially classified the shooting as racially motivated. The trial is expected to continue through June 20, with Lenoir facing a possible prison sentence of up to 30 years if convicted.
