Tehran, Iran – A dangerous escalation in the confrontation between Israel and Iran occurred on Monday, as an Israeli airstrike targeted the Iranian state television building, leading to explosions heard in several parts of the city. This attack was met with a firm Iranian vow of retaliation.
Attack Details and Consequences
The strike took place while a presenter was live on air, strongly criticizing Israel. Footage broadcast by Iranian media showed her leaving the studio amidst a cloud of dust and falling debris from the ceiling. The channel resumed broadcasting after a brief interruption, while Iranian authorities condemned the attack as a “malicious act and a war crime.”
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that “the broadcasting authority affiliated with the Iranian regime, responsible for propaganda and incitement, was targeted,” adding that Israel would continue to strike the Iranian regime wherever it is found. The Israeli army also called on residents in the area to evacuate buildings in anticipation of further attacks on military installations.
Iranian Response and Escalation
In response, Iran launched missiles at several major Israeli cities, in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed that “our armed forces will continue to strike Israeli targets until the aggression against the Iranian people ceases,” stressing that war criminals would not escape punishment.
Casualties and Damage
Israeli strikes on Tehran have resulted in at least 224 deaths and over a thousand injuries, according to official Iranian figures. Conversely, Iranian missile responses have caused at least 24 deaths in Israel since Friday, with the toll rising to 11 on Monday after new casualties were reported in Petah Tikva, Bnei Brak, and Haifa.
Widespread Damage and Mutual Warnings
The reciprocal attacks caused significant damage in several areas, with fires engulfing parts of residential buildings in Petah Tikva and some neighborhoods ablaze. Israeli military sources also revealed that three Israelis were killed in an Iranian attack on an oil refinery in Haifa.
The Israeli Defense Minister vowed that “the residents of Tehran will pay the price,” while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened “more destructive” missile strikes against vital Israeli targets.
Humanitarian Impact and Precautionary Measures
Tehran witnessed a near-total paralysis, with markets and shops closed, and citizens queuing at gas stations amidst fears of escalating confrontation. The government announced that mosques, metro stations, and schools would be converted into shelters to protect residents from airstrikes.
Targeting Strategic Facilities and International Positions
Israel announced that it targeted command centers belonging to the Quds Force in Tehran, in addition to nuclear facilities and vital infrastructure, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) denied that the Natanz nuclear facility had been directly attacked. For its part, Iran urged the IAEA to condemn the Israeli attacks, asserting that its nuclear facilities are peaceful.
Rising International Tensions
These developments come amidst Western concerns about Iran’s potential pursuit of nuclear weapons, which Tehran denies. Calls for a return to negotiations have also emerged from the United States, amidst warnings of a widespread regional confrontation.
In light of this unprecedented escalation, the situation in the region remains open to all possibilities, with international anticipation for any new developments that could alter the equations of conflict in the Middle East.
