Taounate – Three unemployed youths from the town of Qaria Ba Mohammed, in the Taounate province, have temporarily suspended their open-ended hunger strike as of Tuesday, following mediation efforts by members of the Regional Committee of the National Council for Human Rights. The decision came after an agreement with local authorities, promising the strikers kiosks and job opportunities.
This development comes as a fourth unemployed protester, Youssef El Kouni, continues his hunger strike in the local Ain Aicha prison. El Kouni has entered the 37th day of his “battle of empty stomachs.” He was arrested during protests organized by the National Association of Unemployed University Graduates in the area.
In a statement, the association renewed its call for the immediate release of El Kouni and the dropping of all charges against him. It also urged local officials and the president of the municipal council to promptly deliver on the promises made to the hunger strikers.
It is worth noting that the region witnessed a wave of solidarity activities over the past weekend, involving human rights, trade union, political, and student organizations. A solidarity convoy highlighted the deteriorating health conditions of the hunger strikers, particularly after their fast exceeded 36 days, raising serious concerns about their fate.
