Local actors in the city of Taza have voiced their outrage over what they describe as the “ongoing chaos” affecting public property, particularly along Allal Al Fassi Street. Although sidewalk expansions are currently underway as part of urban development projects, pedestrians report no tangible improvement on the ground due to the widespread occupation of these spaces by cafés and commercial establishments.
The same sources described the situation as “unacceptable,” arguing that it makes little sense to allocate larger areas for sidewalks under the pretext of facilitating pedestrian movement and comfort, only to see them almost entirely taken over by café chairs and tables, with no firm action from the relevant authorities.
According to these sources, the situation on Allal Al Fassi Street exemplifies what could occur on other streets in the absence of strict enforcement of laws and respect for public space. They called on local authorities to urgently intervene, restore order, and ensure pedestrians’ right to use sidewalks safely and freely.
Local stakeholders also urged that this scenario not be repeated in ongoing or future urban projects. They stressed the need to strike a balance between commercial investment rights and citizens’ rights to accessibility and comfort, within a framework of full legal compliance.
