French Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, expressed his sincere gratitude to Morocco today, Wednesday, following the arrest of a dual French-Moroccan citizen suspected of involvement in kidnapping cases linked to extortion and ransom demands. Darmanin emphasized that this operation exemplifies the distinguished judicial cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the field of organized crime.
Details of the Joint Security Operation
The National Judicial Police, in coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance, arrested the 25-year-old suspect in Tangier. He is believed to be connected to an international criminal network operating in France, specializing in kidnappings, extortion, and ransom demands, targeting cryptocurrency traders and money laundering activities.
The arrest followed the transfer of an official complaint file from French authorities to their Moroccan counterparts, containing the criminal acts and charges attributed to the suspect, which are believed to have been committed on French soil.
Seized Items and Legal Procedures
Searches conducted during the arrest revealed the suspect was in possession of various bladed weapons, including swords and large knives, as well as dozens of phones and communication devices currently undergoing forensic analysis to determine their digital contents. A sum of money suspected to be linked to the criminal activities was also seized.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was subject to an international arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities due to his involvement in extortion and violent kidnapping crimes, demanding ransom from victims involved in cryptocurrency trading, as well as participation in laundering proceeds from these criminal activities.
Intensive Judicial Follow-up
The suspect has been placed under judicial custody at the disposal of the investigation conducted by the National Judicial Police under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor, in preparation for legal proceedings in accordance with national legislation, given his Moroccan nationality.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Transnational Organized Crime
This operation is part of the sustained and intensive efforts by Moroccan security services, represented by the General Directorate for National Security and the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance, to combat transnational organized crime and deny perpetrators any safe haven, logistical base, or resources to support and finance their criminal schemes.
This step highlights a successful model of security and judicial cooperation between Morocco and France, reflecting a shared commitment to confronting international security challenges and protecting citizens from serious organized crimes.
