Morocco’s banking network saw a slight decline in the number of branches nationwide in 2024, according to Bank Al-Maghrib’s annual report on the distribution of bank offices.
The report revealed that the total number of bank branches stood at 5,701 by the end of 2024, compared to 5,814 in 2023, representing a net decrease of 113 branches. This decline occurred despite the opening of 39 new branches and the closure of 152, reflecting a shift toward restructuring branch networks and optimizing operational costs.
Bank Type Breakdown
Traditional banks continue to dominate Morocco’s banking landscape, operating 5,486 branches. Participatory (Islamic) banks follow with 206 branches, while foreign banking institutions maintain just 9 branches across the country.
Regional Distribution
Regionally, Casablanca–Settat remains the leader with 1,612 branches, followed by Rabat–Salé–Kenitra with 854 branches, and Fes–Meknes in third place with 665 branches. Other notable regions include:
- Tangier–Tetouan–Al Hoceima: 545 branches
- Eastern Region: 504 branches
- Marrakech–Safi: 500 branches
- Souss–Massa: 420 branches
- Beni Mellal–Khenifra: 291 branches
- Draa–Tafilalet: 147 branches
The southern regions recorded significantly lower coverage:
- Laayoune–Sakia El Hamra: 73 branches
- Guelmim–Oued Noun: 58 branches
- Dakhla–Oued Ed-Dahab: only 32 branches
Financial Coverage Disparity
This regional disparity underscores the continued concentration of banking services in major economic hubs, while interior and southern regions remain underserved. The report highlights the challenges of promoting financial inclusion and expanding access to banking services, especially in economically vulnerable or low-density areas.
Digital Shift and Sector Trends
Observers suggest that this modest contraction in bank branches is aligned with a broader shift toward digitalization, as banks reduce physical branches in favor of mobile banking apps and digital services. This trend necessitates a reevaluation of proximity banking policies to ensure fair access to financial services for all citizens, regardless of geography.
