Shift in British Stance: UK Backs Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Sahara

Rabat, Morocco – The United Kingdom today, Sunday, announced a new and clear position on the Moroccan Sahara issue, deeming the Moroccan autonomy plan as “the most credible, realistic, and practical basis for a lasting settlement to the regional dispute.” This declaration came in a joint communiqué signed by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in the capital Rabat.

British Support for Comprehensive Settlement Efforts

The joint communiqué stated that “the United Kingdom considers the autonomy proposal presented by [Morocco] in 2007 to be the most credible, realistic, and practical basis for a lasting settlement to the dispute… and will continue to work bilaterally, especially in the economic sphere, as well as regionally and internationally, in line with this position, to support the settlement of the dispute.”

The statement also noted that “the United Kingdom is closely following the positive dynamic underway in this regard under the leadership of King Mohammed VI,” affirming that London “recognizes the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco.” The communiqué added that resolving this regional dispute “will enhance stability in North Africa and relaunch bilateral dynamism and regional integration.”

Boosting Economic and Financial Cooperation in the Sahara

In a move reflecting this new stance, the United Kingdom affirmed that “UK Export Finance may consider supporting projects in the Sahara,” particularly within the framework of “the agency’s commitment to mobilize £5 billion to support new economic projects across the country.”

This approach underscores the United Kingdom’s commitment to fostering economic development in the region, reflecting confidence in the stability and developmental prospects Morocco offers.

Morocco as a Gateway for African Development

The joint communiqué concluded by affirming that “the United Kingdom recognizes Morocco as a key gateway for social and economic development in Africa and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Morocco as a partner for growth across the continent.” This recognition highlights Morocco’s pivotal role in achieving stability and prosperity on the African continent and reinforces its position as a strategic partner for the United Kingdom.
