French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Friday, during his visit to Singapore, that recognizing the State of Palestine is a “moral duty” and a political necessity in the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. He emphasized, however, that such recognition must be based on specific conditions to ensure security and stability in the region.
Macron explained that the foremost condition is Palestine’s recognition of the State of Israel and its right to live in peace and security. He also stressed the need for the disarmament of Hamas in order to achieve a sustainable political settlement, underlining that Hamas must not participate in the next Palestinian government. Additionally, he called for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Addressing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Macron stated that Israel must take immediate steps to resolve the crisis in the besieged territory. He warned that if Israel fails to provide urgent solutions, the European Union may need to adopt a firmer stance, potentially including economic sanctions.
Macron added that the EU must approach this issue with seriousness, saying: “We need to take a firm position on this matter; the current situation demands it. Still, I remain hopeful that Israel will change its policy and that a humanitarian solution meeting everyone’s needs can be reached.”
It is worth noting that a high-level international conference on the two-state solution is set to take place in New York from June 17 to 20, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. The conference aims to accelerate the implementation of the two-state solution and advance the vision of an independent Palestinian state.
Earlier this year, Macron had stated that France may officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming conference. Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution at the end of last year calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
