Taza: Shops on the Brink of Bankruptcy Due to the Spread of Street Vendors and Lack of Regulation

Shops in the city of Taza are facing a severe crisis due to the growing phenomenon of street vendors, who pose a major challenge to formal shop owners. Many of these merchants are witnessing a significant drop in customer numbers, as informal vendors occupy the spaces in front of their stores, blocking direct access to potential clients.

In statements by several shopkeepers, they pointed out that this situation has drastically reduced their sales, forcing them to incur heavy financial losses. One merchant said: “We are suffering from a lack of customers because street vendors occupy vital spots where people usually pass, which hinders the flow of customers who prefer shopping in open and accessible areas.”

Another added: “Street vendors don’t pay taxes or follow any commercial regulations, while formal businesses are bound by all these requirements. Yet, these vendors display their goods in strategic locations, often larger than the shop spaces themselves, which allows them to make unfair profits at the expense of regular traders.”

The shopkeepers warn that this uneven competition may lead to the closure of many stores, especially given the tough economic conditions many are already facing.

In light of this situation, traders are calling on the relevant authorities to urgently intervene by organizing the presence of street vendors, providing designated areas for them, and enforcing market regulation laws to safeguard the rights and interests of formal shop owners.
