In a notable development during the recent Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) conference held in Algeria, Mohamed Sabbari, First Deputy Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, successfully thwarted Algeria’s attempt to relocate the Union’s General Secretariat from Damascus to Algiers.
In a video widely shared on social media, Sabbari is seen engaging in a heated exchange with the President of the Algerian National Assembly—who currently chairs the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union—emphasizing the need to uphold democratic principles and respect Syria’s representation in the union. He firmly argued that no decision regarding Syria can be made in the absence of its official representative.
During his address to the conference, Sabbari highlighted the pivotal role the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union has played since its establishment in promoting dialogue among Arab parliaments. He noted that the union has significantly contributed to building a parliamentary democratic culture rooted in cooperation and mutual understanding.
Sabbari also reaffirmed Morocco’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people. He strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression and reiterated that the Palestinian cause remains central to the Arab agenda. He further recalled Morocco’s consistent stance in supporting Palestine, underlining the significant role of His Majesty King Mohammed VI—Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee—in backing the Palestinian people through on-the-ground humanitarian projects overseen by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency.
