After the Death of a Child in Taza Due to a Venomous Snake Bite… Health Delegate Warns of a Deadly Species and Urges Immediate Preventive Measures

A 12-year-old boy passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Ibn Baja Provincial Hospital Center in Taza, after being bitten by a venomous snake. Despite receiving emergency care and necessary treatment in the intensive care unit, he succumbed to the effects of the bite, according to the local delegation of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.

According to information provided by Dr. Hicham Alaoui, the Provincial Health Delegate, the child was admitted to the emergency department of Ibn Baja Hospital in critical condition, after being transferred from the nearby health center in Oued Amlil. His condition deteriorated rapidly due to the fast spread of venom throughout his body.

The health official confirmed that the medical team made intensive efforts to save his life. The victim was placed in intensive care and received antivenom treatment. However, his condition worsened due to severe internal bleeding and other serious symptoms, including loss of consciousness and eye redness, leading to his death just hours after his hospital admission.

Dr. Alaoui noted that the snake responsible belongs to a highly venomous species known for its lethal and rapid effects. He called for heightened vigilance and necessary precautions, especially in rural areas where such reptiles become more active with rising temperatures.

The Health Delegate also urged the organization of awareness and sensitization campaigns for local populations, in coordination with local authorities and civil society organizations, to reduce the risk of scorpion stings and snake bites. He emphasized the importance of adopting simple preventive behaviors, such as clearing vegetation around homes, sealing cracks, tiling walls, and inspecting clothes and shoes before wearing them.
