The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has announced the launch of a deep review process for the drug pricing system in Morocco. This initiative aims to strike a delicate balance between protecting citizens’ purchasing power, incentivizing access to innovative medicines, and ensuring the sustainability of health coverage. The announcement was made by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amina El-Thahraoui, on Monday, during a parliamentary session for oral questions in the House of Representatives.
Responding to an oral question posed by the Haraki parliamentary group concerning “National Drug Policy,” Minister El-Thahraoui explained that this reform seeks to formulate a new vision for drug pricing. She affirmed that this process is currently underway within a broad consultative framework involving all relevant stakeholders. The goal is to adopt a fair and transparent pricing system that ensures equity and is based on international benchmarks, while taking into account the national specificities of the Kingdom.
El-Thahraoui highlighted that drug policy is one of the fundamental pillars of the comprehensive national health system reform, led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This policy is built upon several strategic axes, chief among them being the establishment of the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products.
In a related context, the Minister confirmed that this agency officially became operational after the appointment of its Director-General by His Majesty the King on October 18 last year, followed by the convening of its first board meeting. El-Thahraoui underscored the “leading” role of this agency in regulating and developing the pharmaceutical sector in Morocco, through improving procedures for marketing authorizations and control. It also aims to involve all stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, and to enhance pharmaceutical sovereignty and national industrial innovation, thereby ensuring the provision of quality medicines at reasonable prices for citizens.
