Rabat – Moroccan star Soufiane El Bakkali, Olympic and world champion, electrified the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat with a dominant victory in the 3000m steeplechase at the Wanda Diamond League, clocking a world-leading time of 8:00.70.
The Tokyo 2021 and Budapest 2022 gold medalist delivered a masterclass performance at the Mohammed VI International Athletics Meeting, the fourth leg of the 2025 Diamond League, leaving Germany’s Frederik Ruppert (8:01.49) and Kenya’s Edmund Serem (8:07.47) in his wake.
Global Stars Shine in Rabat
The meet also saw American sprinter Courtney Lindsay storm to victory in the 200m with a time of 20.04 seconds, edging out Liberia’s Joseph Fahnbulleh (20.12) and fellow American Fred Kerley (20.16).
In the 1500m, Jonah Koech of the U.S. set a new meet record (3:31.43), finishing ahead of Kenya’s Reynold Cheruiyot (3:31.78) and Festus Lagat (3:32.06). Morocco’s Anass Essayi claimed fifth place with a time of 3:32.88.
El Bakkali Cements His Legacy
This win further solidifies El Bakkali’s status as the undisputed king of distance running, following his historic triumphs at the Olympics and World Championships. The 28-year-old remains a top contender for gold at Los Angeles 2028.
