Public Outcry Over Renaming Historic Moulay Yacoub Hammam to “Hammam Vichy”

Moulay Yacoub, Morocco – The decision to change the name of the historic “Hammam Moulay Yacoub” to “Hammam Vichy” has sparked widespread condemnation among local communities. Opponents describe the move as an “assault on the identity of the Yacoubi heritage” and claim it was done “under the cover of profound darkness” without “consultation” or “respect for the history of a hammam visited by 1.5 million people”.

Many local stakeholders express their anger at this initiative, noting that it occurred while the Moulay Yacoub municipality was preoccupied with a relocation issue. This is seen as “exploiting a sensitive situation” to push through a decision that infringes upon the identity of a historical landmark deeply rooted in Moroccan history.

In response to this “erasure of Moulay Yacoub Hammam’s identity,” the angered residents have issued an urgent appeal to “local and regional authorities” and the “Municipal Council” for “immediate intervention” to halt this “unacceptable” decision. They assert that they “will not accept this, will not agree to the obliteration of Moulay Yacoub Hammam’s identity, and will never remain silent”.

Moulay Yacoub Hammam, with its therapeutic waters and widespread renown, is considered a “national heritage” and an important tourist destination. This makes any change to its name or identity an issue that requires broad dialogue and consensus with the local population, as well as national and local stakeholders.
