Vatican City: This Sunday morning, His Excellency Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, Head of Government, represented the Commander of the Faithful, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, at the official inauguration ceremony of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. The ceremony took place in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, marking his ascension to the Papal See. The enthronement ceremony of Pope Leo XIV, who was elected head of the Catholic Church on May 8th, was attended by numerous heads of state and government, as well as international figures.
At the conclusion of this solemn ceremony, Mr. Akhannouch extended greetings to Pope Leo XIV, who subsequently received the various heads of delegations inside St. Peter’s Basilica.
His Majesty the King’s representation at this prominent event follows a congratulatory message sent by the Commander of the Faithful, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of his election to the Papal See.1 In this message, His Majesty the King affirmed that “the Kingdom of Morocco and the Holy See, thanks to their shared long history of diplomatic and spiritual customs, are bound by ancient ties founded on mutual respect and friendly understanding, and on their active commitment to peace and coexistence.”2
His Majesty further highlighted that “the Kingdom of Morocco, a land of fraternal coexistence between monotheistic religions, has constantly pursued its efforts to promote the spirit of solidarity and harmony among peoples and civilizations.”3 His Majesty expressed his “personal and firm keenness for these distinguished ties between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Holy See to continue, under your reign, in the same spirit of brotherhood, friendship, and understanding.” On the same occasion, His Majesty the King expressed his hope that these relations would continue to be strengthened “in order to support continuous dialogue between Muslims and Christians on the basis of universal human values and the common teachings of Abrahamic religions.”
