The Sebou River Basin Agency organized a water conservation awareness day last Wednesday at Oum Al Qura High School, located in the rural commune of Ain Maâtouf, in the Taounate province.
This event was part of the “Water Classrooms Caravan,” an initiative aimed at educating students on the importance of water and methods to preserve this precious resource.
Organized in partnership with the Taounate Provincial Council, the Regional Academy of Education and Training for the Fès-Meknès region, and the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers, the event forms part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness among youth. It is also aligned with the national communication strategies of the 2020–2027 Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program, which seeks to foster eco-education and change behaviors related to excessive water consumption.
In a statement to Maghreb Arab Press (MAP), Khalid El Ghmari, Director of the Sebou River Basin Agency, emphasized that the agency organizes such events annually across various regions. The goal is to raise awareness among students about the importance of water conservation. The program featured workshops, cultural activities, and educational presentations to boost awareness on water-related issues. El Ghmari also noted that students would visit the under-construction Sidi Abbou Dam to learn more about Morocco’s large-scale dam policy.
Mohamed Sellassi, President of the Taounate Provincial Council, also underlined the role of students in promoting a culture of water preservation within their communities. He stressed the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to safeguard this vital resource, in line with the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
Omar El Weddadi, Regional President of the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers for the Fès-Meknès region, described the event as part of an ongoing partnership with the Regional Academy. He emphasized that it aims to engage students in understanding the value of effective water management and the need for its sustainability.
El Weddadi highlighted that schools must serve as platforms to instill sustainable development principles in future generations, stressing the importance of raising a generation that recognizes the vital role of water as a key natural resource.
This awareness day is one of many outreach and field activities organized by the Sebou River Basin Agency to promote responsible water use and encourage behavior change within society.
