The administration of the local prison in Taounate has broken its silence to refute allegations published by an online news outlet regarding the conditions of accommodation and treatment within the facility. The administration described the claims as “completely unfounded” and aimed at disrupting the institution’s work and tarnishing the reputation of its staff.
A statement issued by the administration asserted that the facility does not suffer from poor hygiene or shortages in mattresses and blankets, contrary to what has been claimed. It clarified that all areas of the prison, including the cells, are cleaned regularly every morning and evening to ensure a healthy environment for inmates.
Regarding healthcare services, the administration explained that while the prison does not have a full-time general practitioner, it benefits from regular weekly visits by doctors from the Bourkaiz and Ras El Ma prisons in Fes, twice a week. Additionally, a permanent dentist is stationed at the facility. Inmates are also transferred to regional hospitals in Fes and Taounate for pre-scheduled medical appointments.
As for accommodation resources, the administration stated that mattresses and blankets are available in sufficient quantities and are distributed to inmates according to need and seasonal requirements.
The administration also stressed that inmates are treated in accordance with applicable laws, without discrimination or favoritism. Each prisoner is entitled to shop at the prison canteen once a month, based on a scheduled rotation that covers all prison wards and within the defined financial limit.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to preserving the dignity and rights of prisoners, and called for verifying facts before spreading what it described as “malicious misinformation.”
