Sidi Yahya Ben Zroual in Taounate: Local Outrage Over Marginalization and the Silence of Elected Officials Deepens Residents’ Suffering

The Sidi Yahya Ben Zroual commune, located in the Gafsai district of the Taounate province, is facing difficult developmental conditions, with local sources describing it as “chronic marginalization” that has affected various vital sectors, in the absence of tangible interventions from the concerned authorities.

Several residents of the commune reported, in similar statements, that the region’s infrastructure is in a state of significant deterioration, particularly in terms of roads and pathways, which they say are “unfit for use in most seasons.” This increases the isolation of local villages and exacerbates residents’ difficulties in transportation, especially in urgent medical cases.

Local speakers pointed out that the commune lacks a well-equipped health center, and the nearest qualified medical facility is several kilometers away. This forces patients, especially pregnant women and the elderly, to travel to Gafsai or Taounate under difficult conditions, threatening their health and safety.

In the same context, community activists in the area confirmed that the youth of the commune are “condemned to idleness” due to the absence of any sports or cultural facilities. They consider this a factor that increases feelings of frustration and drives many to migrate to cities or fall into the traps of unemployment and social isolation.

The same sources expressed surprise at the “complete lack of communication from the commune’s leadership,” pointing out that “the president has never held any meetings with the residents or announced a clear developmental program.” This raises, according to them, questions about the local leader’s role and commitment to the citizens’ aspirations.

The speakers stressed that their demands are “not unreasonable,” but simply concern providing the basic conditions for a decent life, as guaranteed by the Moroccan constitution. These demands include road paving, the establishment of a health center, the provision of youth facilities, and ensuring effective communication between the municipal council and citizens.

Amid this ongoing situation, the residents hope that the regional and provincial authorities will address their commune’s conditions and put an end to years of marginalization and exclusion through integrated development plans that restore dignity to the area and its people.
