Moroccan Political Party Criticizes Government Response to Building Collapse

A regional branch of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) in Fez has strongly criticized the statements made by the Secretary of State in charge of Housing regarding the recent building collapse in the city.

In a statement released on Monday, May 12, 2025, the PJD expressed “great surprise” at the Secretary of State’s response during a parliamentary session concerning the tragic incident in the Al-Hassani district. The party accuses the official of attempting to evade responsibility for the collapse, which resulted in fatalities and injuries.

The PJD specifically refutes the Secretary of State’s assertion that the responsibility lies with the former heads of the city council and district, citing an evacuation order issued in 2018. The party argues that this position demonstrates a lack of understanding of the legal framework governing the responsibilities of local officials, the Housing Ministry, and other relevant authorities. They reference specific laws related to regional authorities and buildings threatened with collapse to support their argument.

The statement also:

  • Extends condolences to the families of the victims.
  • Condemns what it perceives as the Secretary of State’s “disregard for the sanctity of the victims” and “disrespect for the intelligence of citizens.”
  • Criticizes the official’s use of a phrase considered derogatory towards the city of Fez.
  • Holds the Secretary of State and the Minister of National Planning, Urban Development, Housing, and Urban Policy responsible for the alleged refusal to renew an agreement providing financial aid to those affected by the collapse.

The PJD’s statement concludes by emphasizing the need for government officials to take their responsibilities seriously.
