Zelensky Says He Will “Wait” for Putin in Turkey on Thursday… Trump Urges “Immediate” Meeting1

Ankara/Washington – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that he will “wait” for his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Turkey, where the latter proposed holding talks between Russia and Ukraine starting next Thursday.

“We await a complete and sustainable ceasefire, starting tomorrow, to provide a necessary basis for diplomacy,” Zelensky wrote on X, adding, “I will wait for Putin in Turkey on Thursday.2 Personally. I hope that this time, the Russians will not look for excuses.”

The Russian president had earlier proposed “direct” and “unconditional” negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul starting on Thursday.3

Putin did not “exclude” discussing the idea of a ceasefire during talks with Kyiv, but stressed that these discussions should address “the root causes of the conflict.”

For his part, Zelensky demands that Russia commit to a 30-day “complete, sustainable, and reliable” ceasefire starting on Monday.

Meanwhile, the US president urged Ukraine and Russia to meet “immediately” on Sunday.

“Russian President (Vladimir) Putin doesn’t want a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, but rather a meeting on Thursday in Turkey to negotiate a possible end to the bloodshed. Ukraine should agree immediately,” the US president stated on his Truth Social network.

He added, “This will at least allow them to determine if an agreement is possible, and if it is not, the European leaders and the United States will know where they stand and can act accordingly,” in a possible allusion to the sanctions threats brandished by Ukraine’s European allies.

“I am beginning to doubt that Ukraine will reach an agreement with Putin, who is too busy celebrating victory in World War II,” he also asserted.
