National League of Eminent Professors Calls for Strike and Protest Over Ministry’s “Procrastination”

Rabat: The National League of Eminent Professors ( العصبة الوطنية للأساتذة المبرزين ), affiliated with the National Federation of Education Workers ( الجامعة الوطنية لموظفي التعليم UNTM ), has announced a national strike for two days, April 23rd and 24th, 2025, in addition to a central protest in front of the Ministry of National Education in Rabat on April 24th, starting at 11:00 AM. This announcement came in a statement issued by the League in Rabat on April 19th, 2025, in which it expressed its “condemnation” of the Ministry’s “procrastination” in issuing a special statute for this category of professors.

In its statement, reviewed by the newspaper, the League affirmed that it “is mindful of the gravity of the moment and the responsibility it bears in defending the case of eminent professors, far from all empty trade union posturing.” Following its monitoring of the “zero progress in the meetings of the technical committee dedicated to the issuance of the statute for professors,” it announced a series of points that led it to escalate its actions.

The National League of Eminent Professors held the supervisory ministry “responsible for its failure to abide by the agreements concluded with the most representative education unions,” particularly the agreements of April 19th, 2011, and December 26th, 2023, which stipulate the creation of a special statute for eminent professors. It also denounced the “suspension of the technical committee for the special statute of eminent professors” and the “failure to present the draft statute for them and include it in the sectoral dialogue like other files.”

Consequently, the League called on all eminent professors nationwide to “engage in a national strike on April 23rd and 24th, 2025, with a central protest in front of the Ministry of National Education in Rabat on April 24th, 2025, starting at eleven o’clock in the morning.”

The National League of Eminent Professors reiterated its demand for the supervisory ministry to respond to the “legitimate and just demands” of this category, which include: “the establishment of a fair, motivating, and unified special statute for the body of eminent professors,” “the creation of new promotion grades similar to other categories,” “the approval of research compensation commensurate with the tasks assigned to eminent professors,” “the establishment of a standard 12-hour weekly teaching load,” and “linking the supplementary teaching allowance to the cadre and including it in retirement calculations,” in addition to other demands related to enabling them to teach in post-baccalaureate and university levels, opening the selection process for those working in secondary education to join post-baccalaureate levels, opening competition for leadership positions in central and external departments of the ministry, providing the material and moral conditions for eminent professors to carry out all their tasks, abolishing mandatory overtime, ensuring fairness and motivation for those assigned non-teaching tasks, and revising the memorandum organizing transfer movements based on clear and measurable criteria that ensure equal opportunities and regulate the transfer of eminent professors to and from preparatory classes, higher technician certificate programs, and training centers.

In conclusion of its statement, the League warned of the “seriousness of the delicate stage that the case of eminent professors is going through” and called for “rallying around their just cause and preparing for all forms of struggle to achieve their legitimate demands,” affirming the principle that “rights are never lost when there are claimants.”
