Serious Accusations Face “Herbomo” Protesters in Sefrou Over Price Hikes

The judicial body at the criminal division of the Sefrou Court of First Instance has scheduled March 20th as the date for the trial of seven individuals in connection with the events that took place at the weekly market in Rabat Al Khir (Herbomo) early last week. These events were sparked by rising prices, according to local sources.

Sources indicated that the Public Prosecutor’s Office decided to pursue charges against six individuals in detention, while the seventh individual remains free. The case stems from a complaint filed by vegetable and fruit traders, who reported that their goods were damaged and looted, prompting the Public Prosecutor to initiate a criminal investigation.

The investigations revealed that the accused face charges of “inciting disorder, attacking others’ property, and encouraging criminal acts,” as well as “resistance to public authorities’ decisions.” Investigations also revealed that one person was involved in broadcasting a live video of the events, containing unverified accusations intended to defame and incite citizens.

It is worth noting that security authorities arrested 14 individuals following the protests, seven of whom were referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Six of them were placed under provisional detention, while one person was released.

Sefrou / Widespread Boycott of “Monday Herbomo” Market Due to High Prices and Lack of Oversight

Recently, the “Monday Herbomo” market in the Sefrou region witnessed widespread boycotting by residents in protest against high prices, especially the price of sardines, which reached 20 dirhams per kilogram. This sparked significant dissatisfaction among citizens, who considered the price hike unjustified given the difficult economic conditions.

In response to this situation, residents demanded that market traders leave in protest against these high prices, holding intermediaries responsible for these hikes, which exceed the purchasing power of citizens. Protesters also called on the government to intervene immediately to regulate prices and restore balance to the market, highlighting the absence of effective oversight and coordination between government bodies.

In this context, protesters demanded strict measures to address this issue, particularly regulating the role of intermediaries who cause unjustified price increases. They also called for reasonable profit margins to ensure market stability and protect citizens’ purchasing power.

It is worth noting that some products are sold at lower prices from their sources but reach consumers at inflated prices due to the numerous intermediaries and lack of regulations, reflecting the chaos that threatens the stability of the local market.
