Recently, the “Ithnain Ahromoumo” market in the province of Séfrou witnessed a widespread boycott by local residents in protest against soaring prices, particularly the price of sardines, which reached 20 dirhams per kilogram. This sharp increase has caused significant discontent among citizens, who consider it unjustified given the current economic hardships.
In response to this situation, the residents demanded that market traders leave as a sign of their rejection of these high prices. They blamed intermediaries for the excessive increases that exceed the purchasing power of ordinary citizens. Protesters also called on the government to take immediate action to regulate prices and restore balance to the market, highlighting the lack of effective oversight and coordination among governmental authorities.
Amid the growing frustration, protesters urged the implementation of strict measures to address the issue, including regulating the role of intermediaries who contribute to the unjustified rise in prices. They also called for setting reasonable profit margins to ensure market stability and protect consumers’ purchasing power.
It is worth noting that some products are sold at low prices from their sources but reach consumers at significantly higher prices due to the involvement of multiple intermediaries and the absence of regulatory measures. This reflects the chaos threatening the stability of the local market.
