Overcrowded Cemeteries and Rising Costs in Fez: A Crisis Burdening Families Awaiting Urgent Solutions

The cemeteries of old Fez are facing severe overcrowding, with local sources reporting that most burial sites are now full. This has left many families struggling to find a final resting place for their loved ones amid a significant rise in burial costs, which now range between 1,000 and 1,400 dirhams, despite municipal authorities stating that the official price should not exceed 500 dirhams.

According to multiple sources, citizens have complained about being forced to pay exorbitant fees for a burial plot, particularly in Boujloud Cemetery. Some have even resorted to burying their deceased in narrow pathways within cemeteries due to the lack of available space.

In a related development, MP Khalid Al-Ajli from the National Rally of Independents had previously addressed this issue in a written question to Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit, highlighting the worsening cemetery crisis in Fez due to severe overcrowding.

Al-Ajli stressed that many families struggle to find burial spaces, often spending hours searching across cemeteries or being forced to bury their deceased in passageways. He called for urgent intervention to secure new land for cemetery expansion and the establishment of new burial sites, alongside improving cemetery maintenance in terms of cleanliness and organization.

The MP also questioned the Ministry of Interior regarding the measures it plans to implement to resolve this issue, given the ongoing hardship faced by citizens and the absence of concrete solutions.

This crisis reflects the deep struggles of Fez’s families, who face immense difficulties when losing a loved one, sometimes spending days searching for a burial site. The rising cost of graves further complicates the situation, placing an additional financial burden on low-income families.

Citizens are calling for an urgent response from authorities to find sustainable solutions, whether by allocating new spaces for cemeteries or improving the management of existing burial grounds, ensuring the dignity of the deceased while easing the burden on their families.
