Price flames hit Morocco’s staple foods ahead of Ramadan

The prices of tomatoes and peppers have risen significantly over the past two days, causing discontent among Moroccan citizens, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, which is characterized by an increase in demand for these basic products.

The price of one kilogram of tomatoes in some national markets reached 8 dirhams, while the price of green peppers exceeded 10 dirhams, amid expectations of further increases during the first week of Ramadan.

In an identical press statement, one of the professionals explained that this rise is due to the increased demand for vegetables, especially tomatoes, which are an essential ingredient in the Moroccan table during the holy month, especially in its first weeks.

Some traders attribute this rise to a number of factors, most notably the climatic fluctuations that affected agricultural production, which led to a decrease in supply against an increase in demand, and transportation and distribution costs also witnessed a noticeable increase, which was directly reflected in the prices in the markets.

In this context, some professionals pointed out that speculation in the markets plays a role in exacerbating prices, as some middlemen take advantage of the high demand to make additional profits at the expense of the consumer.

This increase is an additional burden on Moroccan families, especially those with limited incomes, who are already suffering from the repercussions of the ongoing high prices of various foodstuffs, and with the approach of Ramadan, the pressure on family budgets is expected to increase, raising concerns about the continued wave of high prices and their impact on the purchasing power of citizens.

Calls for urgent intervention
In the face of this situation, voices are calling for the intervention of the responsible authorities to control the markets and curb speculation that contributes to the rise in prices. Citizens also call for strengthening control over distribution chains and ensuring price stability, especially during periods of high demand, such as the month of Ramadan.
